Short answer: spam clicking means pressing the mouse button as fast as you can by hand, without timing each click. An auto-clicker is software, a macro or a hardware button that produces clicks for you. The difference matters: rules that ban automation target the auto-clicker, not fast fingers. Hypixel, for example, states that anything which automates a gameplay action is strictly disallowed, including auto or burst clicking from external software or hardware. Breaking a rule like that is what gets accounts banned. Whether a fast manual technique is allowed is a separate question, set by each game or server.
Spam clicking vs auto-clicking
| Term | Who makes each click | Typical rule position |
|---|---|---|
| Spam clicking | You, by hand, as fast as you can, without timing each click. | Manual clicking. Some servers still limit or flag very high click rates. |
| Jitter, butterfly and drag clicking | You, using a specific hand motion to raise the click rate. | Varies by game and server. Check the current rules. |
| Auto-clicker or macro | Software, a mouse macro or a hardware burst button. | Commonly prohibited where it automates gameplay. |
People sometimes call any very fast clicking “spamming”. In this article it means only fast manual clicking. A mouse whose software repeats a click while you hold the button is automation, even if you started it by hand.
What a server rule actually says
Hypixel’s Allowed Modifications page (read October 25, 2026) says:
“anything which automates any player gameplay action is strictly disallowed, be those Minecraft modifications, external software or hardware. This includes things such as (but not limited to) auto/burst clicking buttons or macros, auto-sprint, and aim assists.”
Three things follow from that wording:
- Hardware counts. A gaming mouse with a burst or rapid-fire button is covered, not just downloaded programs.
- The rule is about automation, not speed. It does not publish a CPS limit, so there is no “safe” auto-clicker setting.
- Macros inside allowed mods are still out. The same page notes that one listed mod has optional macro features that are not permitted.
This is one server’s rule. Other games, servers and tournaments write their own, and they change. Read the current rules where you play. This article does not describe how any anti-cheat system detects automation, and you should not use it to look for a way around one.
When spam clicking does not help: cooldown arithmetic
In some games, clicking faster lowers each hit. Minecraft: Java Edition has had an attack cooldown since version 1.9. According to the Minecraft Wiki, base melee damage is multiplied by 0.2 + 0.8 × p², where p is how full the cooldown is, from 0 to 1. Swords have an attack speed of 1.6, a cooldown of about 0.625 seconds.
Assumed arithmetic, recomputable. Assume each click is a sword swing at a steady rate, so the time between swings is 1 ÷ CPS and p = min(1, time ÷ 0.625):
| Steady rate | Time between swings | Cooldown filled (p) | Share of full base damage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 CPS | 0.100 s | 0.16 | 0.2 + 0.8 × 0.16² = 0.22 (22%) |
| 5 CPS | 0.200 s | 0.32 | 0.2 + 0.8 × 0.32² = 0.28 (28%) |
| 2 CPS | 0.500 s | 0.80 | 0.2 + 0.8 × 0.80² = 0.71 (71%) |
| 1.6 CPS | 0.625 s | 1.00 | 0.2 + 0.8 × 1.00² = 1.00 (100%) |
The wiki also notes that a target’s damage immunity limits how many hits connect, so extra swings do not simply add up. The table ignores tick rounding, enchantments, critical hits and knockback. It is arithmetic from the published formula, not a gameplay measurement. The wiki marks the cooldown as exclusive to Java Edition, and servers can run different combat rules. What CPSKit does with automated clicks
We tested our own CPS test on cpskit.com on October 25, 2026, in headless Chrome, with a 5-second run:
| Input | Events sent | What the browser reported | Counted by the test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Script on the page creating pointer events | 20 | All 20 reached the button with isTrusted: false | 0. The test did not start. |
| Clicks injected through Chrome’s DevTools Protocol | 20 | Delivered as trusted input | 20 of 20 |
The test ignores any pointer event the browser marks as untrusted, which is what a script on the page produces. Input that arrives from outside the page, as the DevTools Protocol does here, looks like a real click to the page. We did not test any particular auto-clicker program; this only shows which side of that line each input lands on. The practical result: a browser test cannot tell an outside auto-clicker from your finger, so a score made with one measures the tool, not you. The 4.00 CPS that run reported reflects our scripted spacing, not a human or auto-clicker rate.
How to practice within the rules
- Read the current rules of the game or server first, including anything on click rates and techniques.
- Turn off mouse-software macros and rapid-fire buttons before playing on a server that bans automation.
- Practice with the CPS test using the same duration, device and browser each time, and compare your own runs.
- Use longer runs to see whether your pace holds: endurance clicking explained.
- If fast clicking starts producing double clicks, check the switch with the double-click test.
What was not verified
We did not test any auto-clicker program, mouse macro or burst button, or any game or anti-cheat system. We did not measure the cooldown in game; the damage table is arithmetic from the wiki formula. The Hypixel quote is from one server’s page on the date above, and other servers’ rules were not surveyed. The CPSKit result describes our own test page in one browser.
Frequently asked questions
Is spam clicking cheating?
Clicking fast by hand is not automation. Some games or servers still limit or flag very high click rates, so read their current rules.
Can you get banned for using an auto-clicker?
Yes, where the rules prohibit automation. Hypixel’s rules, for example, disallow auto or burst clicking from software or hardware. Penalties are set by each game or server.
Is a mouse with a burst or rapid-fire button an auto-clicker?
For Hypixel’s rule, yes: it lists hardware auto/burst clicking buttons as disallowed. Other places may word it differently, so check before using one.
Does spam clicking do more damage in Minecraft?
In Java Edition with the attack cooldown, not per hit. By the wiki formula, a sword swung at a steady 10 CPS deals about 22% of full base damage per swing, and damage immunity limits how many hits connect.
Can a CPS test detect an auto-clicker?
Not reliably. CPSKit ignores clicks created by scripts on the page, but input from outside the page is delivered as trusted and looks like a real click.
These tools record events received by your browser. A result does not certify the device, verify your clicking technique or predict what a game will count.
