Why does my mouse double-click on one click?

A single click that lands as two is one of the most common mouse complaints — a link opens twice, a file selects then deselects, a game fires an extra shot. A common cause is chatter: a worn or dirty switch briefly bounces and sends a second press your software never asked for. But it is not the only cause. Before you buy a new mouse, it's worth spending two minutes to see what your browser is actually receiving.

First, see what your browser receives

Open the double-click test and click slowly and deliberately, once at a time, in the test area. The tool reviews the interval between adjacent primary presses and flags the ones that fall below a threshold you can adjust. If genuinely single, well-spaced clicks keep producing pairs of presses just a few milliseconds apart, that pattern is consistent with switch chatter. If the short intervals only show up when you click quickly, the more likely explanation is timing, not a fault.

The starting threshold (80 ms) is exploratory, not a certified failure line. Raising it flags more intervals; lowering it flags fewer. Use it to compare runs, not to grade your hardware.

Chatter vs. how you're clicking

Two different things produce short intervals, and telling them apart matters:

  • Switch chatter (hardware). The mechanical switch bounces on release or press and reports an extra event. It tends to appear even on slow, careful single clicks, and often gets worse over time.
  • Fast or heavy clicking (technique). Rapid tapping, or resting a second finger that grazes the button, can create closely spaced presses that look similar. This shows up when you click fast, not when you click once and wait.

The honest test is repetition: try many slow, spaced single clicks in a fresh run. Chatter keeps intruding; technique-driven pairs largely disappear when you slow down.

If it is the switch, what actually helps

When slow single clicks still double even across a fresh browser session and, ideally, a second computer, the switch is the prime suspect. Practical, non-destructive steps:

  • Test the same mouse on another device or USB port to rule out one machine's software.
  • Update or reinstall the mouse driver, and check any vendor software for a debounce or double-click-speed setting.
  • Contact the manufacturer if the mouse is under warranty — repeatable chatter on slow clicks is a common accepted symptom.

Cleaning or replacing a switch is possible but involves opening the mouse; treat that as a last resort and only if you're comfortable with it.

A two-minute checklist

  • Run the double-click test with slow, spaced single clicks.
  • Repeat in a fresh browser session; try another device if you can.
  • If pairs persist on slow clicks across sessions and devices, treat it as likely hardware and check drivers, ports and warranty.
